  • Current distribution known : Indian Ocean: east coast of Africa northward from about Durban to the Gulf of Oman, including. In East Africa, it is a marine species occasionally entering lower reaches of eastward flowing rivers. It is known from the Tana and Sabaki rivers, Kenya and the Pangani in Tanzania. In Madagascar, it is common and found in the lower reaches of both east and west coast rivers and streams .

    • Pellona natalensis Gilchrist & Thompson, 1908: 202. Type locality: South Head Tugela River, South Africa, depth 24 fathoms. Holotype SAM 9934.
  • Use and trade : marketed fresh and may be dried or salted. Regarded as an excellent bait in the tuna fishery .
