Common names : Sled'ovka sierraleonska (Czech), Vestafrikansk dværgsild (Danish), West African pygmy herring (English), Pisitrissa (Estonian), Taga rana / Warangi (Hausa: Nigeria), Ntita / Worongi (Igbo: Nigeria), Imboli [Ijo (Ijaw): Nigeria], Salanpore (Yoruba: Nigeria) .
Current distribution known : has a widespread but patchy distribution from Senegal to Cameroon. In Lower Guinea, it is only known from the Wouri River (Cameroon). It was originally described from Sierra Leone in western Africa and is now also known to occur in Senegal, Gambia, the Bia (Côte d'Ivoire), Lake Volta (Ghana) and the Niger basin .

Habitat / home range : a pelagic species that occurs in rivers but also in man-made lakes. It schools in open shallow waters, rising to about 30 cm from the surface at night in Lake Volta .
