  • Habitat / home range : very common along sandy shores of Lake Malawi. It is also common in rivers flowing into the lake, and in the Upper and Middle Shire downstream as far as Mpatamanga Gorge. It is found in the shallows on sandy beaches, where it can be observed darting rapidly around in shallow water, as well as rocky shores in sheltered areas. In streams it is found in flowing stretches as well as exposed sandy banks. Its presence in temporary habitats reflects a wide ecological tolerance .

  • Reproduction : the presence of many tiny juveniles in a pool near the Remero River, which flows only during the rains in March indicates that the species had made a breeding migration up the river a few days or perhaps weeks earlier .
