It was formerly quite common in the Ruo River above the Zoa falls, but has not been found below the falls, which constitute a major environmental and ecological barrier between the Upper Ruo and the Shire system. The species was also recorded in Mwabvi River, a small stream on the opposite side of the Shire but this population is now reported to have been extirpated. It is also now known to occur in the upper reaches of the Lurio River in Mozambique, which flows to the Indian Ocean. This stream arises close to Mulanje Mountain, the source of the Ruo System. It is not known how widespread its distribution is in the Lurio system .
