  • Current distribution known : known from the Athi and Tana River systems (upper courses), Kenya .
  • Habitat / home range : found all over the river but prefers to congregate, especially the big ones, in large pools below waterfalls or rapids .
  • Migration / movement : there is a very distinct up-river spawning migration as soon as the first floods come down river. They move downstream after spawning, in about July .
  • Size : 342 mm, weight up to 3.200 g .
  • Types :
    • Barbus mariae Holly, 1929: 34. Type locality: "Kituifluss", Athi River system. Syntypes (2) NMW (the larger specimen selected as lectotype by Banister, 1973).
    • Barbus rhinoceros Copley, 1958: 191. Type locality: "Athi River". No information on the type.
  • Use and trade : native fisherman set their basket traps in the fish weirs to catch them during the migration .
