Common names : Lake salmon (English), Mpasa-norjasdaanio (Estonian), Mpasa [Nyanja (Chichewa): Malawi], Mbasa / Mpasa (Swahili: Tanzania) .
Current distribution known : endemic to Lake Malawi and affluent streams. It also occurs in the Middle Shire River in the vicinity of Liwonde and juveniles have been caught in the small Likwenu stream at the entrance to Liwonde National Park .

Food habits : adults are piscivorous, feeding on small pelagic fishes. Young fish feed on fish fry, plankton, insects and other small organic matter .
