Types :
- Haplochromis cancellus Greenwood, 1963 a: 68. Type locality: "tributaries of the upper Aswa river, about 20 miles north of Soroti". Holotype BMNH n° 1961.12.1: 355 (subsequent examination of this specimen has shown it to be a juvenile of P. taeniolatus. It may be an introduced specimen or a mislabelled specimen).
- Haplochromis taeniolatus Trewavas, 1935: 83. Types localities: "both ends of Lake Nyasa". Lectotype BMNH n° 1935.6.14: 866 (south end of Lake Malawi); paralectotypes BMNH n° 1935.6.14: 865, n° 1935.6.14: 867-869 (5) (designated by Eccles & Trewavas, 1989: 64).
