Types :
- Protomelas macrodon Eccles, 1989 (in Eccles & Trewavas, 1989): 49, fig. 10-12. Type locality of the holotype (one of the syntypes of Tilapia pleurotaenia) erroneously labelled "north end of Lake Tanganyika and from the Usisi River" and corrected by Trewavas, 1946: 246 as "Lake Nyasa". Holotype BMNH n° 1906.9.6: 145; paratype MFRU (near Nkhota Kota).
