Current distribution known : abundant in Mediterranean sea; atlantic coastal waters from southern Norway to Morocco, rare off Mauretania and sporadically to Dakar; records from the lagoon of Accra by Norman & Irvine in Irvine, 1947: 198 and Banana, Lower Congo River, by Boulenger, 1901 q: 356, probably due to misidentifications .
Habitat / home range : in brackish waters, rarely entering freshwater .
Size : 450 mm TL .
