Current distribution known : East Africa from Maputo Bay to the Red Sea, throughout Indian and west Pacific oceans .
Habitat / home range : inshore, mainly on coral reefs, reputed to enter estuaries, recorded from Madagascar in freshwater .
Size : 40 mm TL .
Types :
- Gobius amiciensis Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1837: 135 (part.). Type locality: "Tongatabou". Lectotype MNHN n° B. 2986; paralectotypes (9) MNHN n° 2966 (designated by Hoese, unpublished).
- Gobius echinocephalus Rüppell, 1828: 136, pl. 34, fig. 3. Type locality. "Massaua", Red Sea. No information on type specimen.
- Gobius melanosoma Bleeker, 1852 c: 703. Type locality: "Ceram". Type RMNH n° 4546.
