  • Current distribution known : widely distributed. It ranges from Uganda southwards along the whole coast of East Africa up to the Pongolo system in South Africa. It is known from the entire Zambezi system, including the Okavango, as far as the Cuanza and Cunene Rivers in Angola. In the Congo River basin it occurs in the Upper Kasai, Luapula and Mweru systems. In central Africa: it is known from the Upper Kasai basin in Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Additionally, it is known from Lake Mweru, Lower Luapula, Luongo and Luombwa Rivers, Lubumbashi River, Lake Bangweulu and the Chambeshi River. In eastern Africa: this species occurs in the Aswa River (White Nile system), Lake Nabugabo, Lake Victoria basin, Tana River system, Malagarasi River and Lake Rukwa system. In Tanzania it is also known from the Pangani, Wami and Rufiji River basins, as well as Lake Tanganyika and Ruvuma systems. It is also found in Lake Malawi and its catchment and in the Shire River. In southern Africa: It is widespread across its range including Cuanza, Cunene, Okavango, the Caprivi strip, Rovuma River south to the Limpopo and Incomati River systems in South Africa. It is present in the entire Zambezi system, including the Lower Zambezi in Mozambique, the Middle Zambezi in Zambia and Zimbabwe and the Upper Zambezi in Angola. It is also present in Lake Chilwa basin and Lake Chiuta .

  • Habitat / home range : prefers marshes and marginal vegetation of streams, rivers and lakes. In Swaziland, it is found in rock pools in the Komati River, in Lake Malawi it has been observed on the rocky shore at Cape Maclear, in the Lake Rukwa system it occurs in affluent rivers and small bodies of water and in Lake Chiuta it is fairly common on the lake and in quiet stretches of affluent streams. It is active in subdued light and at night .
