Food habits / trophic level : in the northern Mwanza Gulf, the species is omnivorous, preying upon epilithic algae (predominantly diatoms but also filamentous algae), various epilithic fauna (Bryozoa, insect larvae), as well as on plankton, prawns, and juvenile fishes. At some islands, Bryozoa make up the largest part of its diet, at other places insect larvae, or epilithic algae .

Habitat / home range : restricted to rocky shores where it lives at depths from 0 to 4 m and inhabits predominantly steeply sloping large boulder shores but is found also on gently sloping shores if the boulder size is large enough to provide interstices .
