Current distribution known : known from the coastal drainages of the Bay of Guinea from Ghana to Cameroon, including the Pra, Sio, Mono, Niger delta, Kwa Ibo, Cross, Wouri, Sanaga, Mungo, Lobe and Kribi. Possibly also in the Nyong .

- Synodontis obesus Boulenger, 1898 a: 415. Type localities: "Gabon and Opobo River: Old Calabar". Lectotype BMNH n° 1896.5.5: 67; paralectotypes BMNH n° 1881.7.20: 5-6 (2) (Poll, 1971 a).
