Food habits / trophic level :
in South African estuaries, juveniles feed mainly on amphipods, with polychaetes, small crabs and prawns also being important. Within the sea, juveniles forage on shrimps, penaeid prawns, polychaetes and mysids. Adults consume mainly stomatopods, small fish, shrimps, penaeid prawns and crabs

Habitat / home range :
although it is generally confined to the lower half of estuaries, stragglers have been recorded from the upper reaches of the Knysna and Swartvlei systems where salinities often decline below 10 %o. The piggy is sensitive to rapid changes in temperature, with extensive mortalities having been recorded when cold upwelling events occur along the coast
