  • Food habits / trophic level : copepods were the dominant component in the diet of postlarval (19-30 mm SL), whereas juveniles larger than 50 mm feed mainly on small crabs, isopods, amphipods and insects. Foraging of this mainly midwater species occurs during both the day and night, with daily summer food consumption for juveniles in Swartvlei calculated to be 2.5% of fish mass. When invertebrate food resources are limited, small fish (e.g. Gilchristella aestuaria) are frequently consumed by subadult .
  • Food habits / trophic level_references : Heemstra, 1984 | Marais, 1984 | Whitefield, 1998 | Whitfield, 1985 .
  • Habitat / home range : commonly in fresh waters, estuaries and harbours .
  • Habitat_references : Bianchi, 1985 | Eccles, 1992 | Heemstra, 1984 | Sommer et al., 1996 | Whitefield, 1998 .
  • Morphology / anatomy : Heemstra, 1984 | Skelton, 1993b | Skelton, 2001 | Whitefield, 1998 .
  • Reproduction : in South Africa, spawning by adult (> 14 cm SL) occurs in the nearshore marine environment, often in the vicinity of estuary mouths. The breeding season lasts from October to February in Western Cape waters with evidence suggesting that this species is a serial spawner in Algoa Bay. The absence of adults from estuaries suggests that individuals do not return to these systems after spawning .
