Current distribution known :
native to the River Nile basin (Blue, White, Murchison Nile, Lakes Albert, Kyoga) and Lake Turkana. Except for Uganda and Ethiopia, presence data in all parts of its native range are more than 30 years old. The species is considered possibly extant as preferred habitats are still available, but more data collection is needed to ascertain the present status in most parts of its native range
