  • Current distribution known : endemic to Lake Malawi and its catchment, the Upper Shire River and Lake Malombe. Juveniles have also been recorded rarely in the Lower Shire River, and a small specimen has also been taken from the Linthipe River at Salima near the lakeshore .
  • Food habits / trophic level : feeds on small demersal cichlids during the night. Juveniles mainly feed on trophic eggs released by the female, whilst the male helps the young in searching for invertebrates in and around the nest .

  • Reproduction : breeding sites may be found in rivers, lakes, ponds or swamps. Breeding individuals are recorded at all depths, but the species appears to prefer shallow water (<50m). It comes inshore to breed, a nest being made in shallow water on a sandy substrate. Nest are build by males, with a circular or oval shape, about 3 feet in diameter, the centre below the surface level. Reputed to breed among the rocks. Small fish are being guarded in their nests.Parental care is exhibited by both male and female .
