  • Current distribution known : widespread in the Indo-West Pacific from Samoa and the Line Islands to East Africa, and from Australia northward to the Ryukyu Islands. Has dispersed into the eastern Mediterranean (off Lebanon) via the Suez Canal, but is not well established there .

  • Food habits / trophic level : it is an ambush predator. In estuaries it feeds mainly on mugilids and sparids, although crabs and prawns are also consumed. In the marine environment a variety of reef fish and crabs are eaten .

  • Habitat / home range : juveniles and young adults found in mangrove estuaries and in the lower reaches of freshwater streams. Eventually they migrate offshore to deeper reef areas. Habitat frequently consists of areas of abundant shelter in the form of caves or overhanging ledges .
